Biological properties of water-soluble phosphorhydrazone dendrimers BJPS
Caminade,Anne-Marie; Turrin,Cédric-Olivier; Majoral,Jean-Pierre.
Dendrimers are hyperbranched and perfectly defined macromolecules, constituted of branches emanating from a central core in an iterative fashion. Phosphorhydrazone dendrimers constitute a special family of dendrimers, possessing one phosphorus atom at each branching point. The internal structure of these dendrimers is hydrophobic, but hydrophilic terminal groups can induce the solubility of the whole structure in water. Indeed, the properties of these compounds are mainly driven by the type of terminal groups their bear; this is especially true for the biological properties. For instance, positively charged terminal groups are efficient for transfection experiments, as drug carriers, as anti-prion agents, and as inhibitor of the aggregation of Alzheimer's...

Biological stability of a strain of Cowpea severe mosaic virus over 20 years Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Lima,José Albersio Araujo; Nascimento,Aline Kelly Queiroz do; Silva,Ana Kelly Firmino da; Aragão,Maria do Livramento.
Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is an important crop of the traditional agriculture system in the Northeast of Brazil. It can be infected by more than 20 virus species and Cowpea severe mosaic virus (CPSMV) is one of the most important pathogens that naturally infect cowpea in Brazil. Several CPSMV isolates were obtained and characterized in the Plant Virus Laboratory at the Federal University of Ceará: CPSMV-CE - the first characterized isolate of the virus obtained from cowpea in the State of Ceará; CPSMV-AL - isolated from cowpea in Alagoas; CPSMV-PE - isolated from cowpea in Pernambuco; CPSMV-PR - obtained from soybean (Glycine max) in Paraná and CPSMV-CROT - isolated from Crotalaria paulinea, in Maranhão. An isolate of CPSMV with the property to infect the...

Enhancement of Hevea brasiliensis properties through chemical application Anais da ABC (AABC)
KADIR,ROSZAINI; JANTAN,MOHD D..
ABSTRACT The effects of four different types of bleaching agents (hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, sodium chlorite and oxalic acid) mixed together with 2% boron-based preservative (Celbor SP) were studied on green sawn rubberwood. Two concentration levels (1% and 2%) of were used. Whitish values (W) and colour changes (ΔE) of sawn rubberwood were assessed before and after chemical treatment using a colour meter. Preliminary observation indicated that timber treated with 1% and 2% hydrogen peroxide produced better and more homogeneous colour properties. Hydrogen peroxide treated timber gave higher whitish values (6.23 and 9.91 for 1% and 2% solution, respectively) and lower colour changes (8.49 and 5.51 for 1% and 2% solution, respectively) when...

Influence of seasonality and production method on the antibacterial activity of propolis Animal Sciences
Souza, Edison Antonio de; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquista Filho"; Inoue, Hemily Tiemi; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquista Filho"; Fernandes Júnior, Ary; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquista Filho"; Veiga, Nabor; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquista Filho"; Orsi, Ricardo de Oliveira; UNESP - Botucat - SP.
The antibacterial activity of propolis produced throughout the year by different methods of collection (‘intelligent’ collector of propolis - ICP; plastic screen - PC; conventional scraping - CS) on Staphylococcos aureus and Escherichia coli is investigated. Fifteen beehives (five per collector) of Africanized Apis mellifera were used. Monthly produced propolis, with the same collection technique, was mixed for the preparation of the extract. The ethanol extract of propolis (EEP) was prepared at the ratio of 30% (30 g of propolis, completing the volume for 100 mL with ethanol 70%). Two microorganisms, a positive bacterium Gram Staphylococcus aureus and a negative bacterium Gram Escherichia coli, through the methodology of diffusion in agar, were used for...

Physicochemical and Biological Investigation of Different Structures of Carbon Coatings Deposited onto Polyurethane BABT
Kaczorowski,Witold; Batory,Damian; Jakubowski,Witold; Szymanski,Witold; Komorowski,Piotr; Walkowiak,Bogdan; Sanak,Marek; Niedzielski,Piotr.
The aim of this study was to examine the thrombogenic properties of polyurethane that was surface modified with carbon coatings. Physicochemical properties of manufactured coatings were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and contact angle measurement methods. Samples were examined by the Impact-R method evaluating the level of platelets activation and adhesion of particular blood cell elements. The analysis of antimicrobial resistance against E. coli colonization and viability of endothelial cells showed that polyurethane modified with use of carbon layers constituted an interesting solution for biomedical application.
